How cancer grows and how it is reversed.
The distinctions between promoting health and making a profit are dangerously blurred. The result has been a massive amount of misinformation, for which the typical American consumer pays twice ~ we spend billions of dollars on a ridiculously unhealthy diet and then spend billions more on drugs to hopefully combat the diseases that such toxic diets cause. It is a terrible cycle.
Back in 1989, a rep from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) said on air during a CBS 60 Minutes segment that Alar (a chemical routinely sprayed on apples as a growth regulator) was "the most potent carcinogen in the food supply." Well, the U.S. Apple Industry took a $250 million hit as Americans panicked, and within four months the use of Alar came to a complete halt. You wonder why we are not warned more often...big business can not afford it. Plus, ignorance is bliss.
Cancer causing elements are pervasive in our food supply and in nearly everythingelse we come into contact with on a daily basis. Cigarettes are much easier to distinguish as being carcinogenic and therefore bad... you can see them, they smell stale and awful and the smoke they give off can be quite offensive. On the other hand, those Grilled Chicken Sandwiches, Rib-Eye Steaks, Kraft Mac-n-Cheese, any soft-drink you can name, nitrate-wrapped hotdogs, Carne Asada filled burrritos....they all look, taste or smell too good to be bad! It is too hard to turn our backs on foods we crave and salivate over. Hence, the enormous and embarrasing size of our national waisteline and medical bill.
Cancer grows in three stages: initiation, promotion and progression; it is very similar to planting a field. Initiation is equivalent to putting seeds in the soil, promotion is when the seeds begin to grow into seedlings and then into plants, and finally progression is when the plants grow out of control...invading and claiming the walkways and neighboring fields.
The initiation phase of cancer, once complete, is considered irreversible. This entire stage can take a very short period of time, even just a few minutes. All you need is a carcinogen (any one will do the trick). Carcinogens are chemicals, most often the byproducts of industrial process (although small amounts are found in nature, such as aflatoxin which is a mold found in peanuts and corn and is thought to be one of the most potent carcinogens ever discovered.) The carcinogens genetically transform or mutate normal cells into cancer-prone cells (permanently altering/damaging the DNA of the cell.) These cancer-prone cells are now in our bodies, waiting to germinate...or ready to grow and multiply until they become a visibly detected cancer (foci are microscopic cell clusters and precursors to tumors).
The second stage of promotion (the growth stage) may take years to happen. BUT, like a field of seeds, the cancer cells will grow only under the 'right' conditions. SO, many of us live forever with cancer-prone cells sitting and waiting within our bodies. The promotion of cancer cells is reversible, depending on whether the early cancer cells are given the right conditions or not. This is when diet plays a VERY significant factor.
Dietary factors are either cancer promoters which feed and stimulate cancer growth or anti-promoters, which slow cancer growth. It is a push-pull process...but by feeding our bodies with loads of anti-promoters, we can stop cancer from flourishing. OR, by feeding our bodies a diet of cancer promoters, we are begging for trouble.
Dr. T. Colin Campbelldocumented (supported by several other studies) and found conclusively that a low animal protein diet can decrease, at the initiation stage, the number of cancerous cells. In other words, a diet heavy in animal products (flesh & dairy) promotes cancer cell growth. I do not want to come across as flippant, but in this limited space I do need to be direct. There are MANY studies at the tips of our fingers and in every library across this country that explain these findings in detail. Dr. Cambell's book, The China Study, which I refer to often, is extremely informative. Although it is very scientific in nature, it is easy to read, follow and digest.
Controlling cancer via diet is a 'radical' and very provocative idea to some people, despite all the astounding evidence supporting the findings that a low animal protein diet can override cancer causing effects of very powerful carcinogens. In America, about 15% of our total calories comes from protein and about 80% of this amount comes from animal-based foods. We should be getting 10% of our energy from protein, and most of that protien should be from plant-based foods.Ten percent dietary protein is equivalent to eating 50-60 grams of protein per day. For example, 100 calories of spinach contains about 12 gms of protein versus 100 calories of steak (1.5oz) equals 13 gms of protein.
Cancer has become part of our everyday conversation. More and more people are finding it invading their bodies. More people we know either have it or knows someone who does. It is one of the most feared diseases, and rightly so. HOWEVER, scientific study, upon study have revealed that our convenient, processed, unnatural food supply is full of cancer causing chemicals (human carcinogens), but we keep on polluting our bodies with this stuff. Eating the typical American diet is a bit like playing Russian Roulette!
Take a stand against cancer and stop it from spreading by feeding our bodies with foods that repress the disease, not foods that promote it. Learn which foods are great for health and enjoy them. Be smart. Feed your body the right stuff...keep it healthy, disease free and feeling great!
