Be warned: Drugs plagued with health issues still being pushed.
It is too easy for us (and profitable for biz) to lean on and depend on drugs these days. So many stories about good eating habits and exercise - but still can't combat cholesterol (yadda, yadda, yadda!) What about lifestyle? Have you tried hard to stay away from stress, are you striving to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night...???
Please know that the FDA, a large portion of our medical industry and our big pharmaceutical companies are most concerned with profit, not your health! Take the recent story of Vioxx, which still made Merck money after paying out nearly $5 BILLION (final payout) to settle the lawsuit. Vioxx was launched in the U.S. in 1999 for the treatment of arthritis. It was marketed in 80 countries and used by 84 million people world wide. After being marketed (pushed) worldwide in 2000 Merck did a trial involving 2600 people (or 0.00003% of people consuming the drug!) VERY telling: The FDA approved Vioxx for acute migraine treatment in 2004 ~ just before Merck's recall at the end of the year (after 58,000 cases of heart attack, stroke and 'other injuries' were reported!!!)
Don't wait for another mass recall. Watch what you eat, move, and take care to enjoy life. Here is a summary of Martha Rosenberg's recent article for Alternet titled: 15 Dangerous Drugs Big Pharma Shoves Down Our Throats. She writes:
The following drugs are so plagued with safety problems, it is a wonder they’re on the market at all. It's a testament to Big Pharma's greed and our poor regulatory processes that they are.
Lipitor & Crestor: Lipitor is the #1 selling drug in the world today (2.8million kids are on it, besides the millions of adults, even though diet & exercise have worked to reduce high LDL in high risk groups!) All statins can cause muscle breakdown (called rhabdomyolysis) but combining them with antibiotics, protease inhibitors drugs and anti-fungals increases weakness, dizziness, pain, arthritis and other risks. Crestor is so highly linked with rhabdomyolysis, the FDA's David Graham named it one of the five most dangerous drugs before Congress. Be warned!
Yaz & Yasmin: These sounded too good to be true - and are (of course.) Soon after Bayer launched Yaz in 2006 as going "beyond birth control," 18-year-olds were coming down with blood clots, gall bladder disease, heart attacks and even strokes. Even after deaths occurred, TV ads were so misleading the FDA had Bayer run correction ads - but it seems many people have not noticed! Yaz includes a drug that was never before marketed in the U.S. - drospirenone - which apparently causes elevated potassium, heart problems, and a change in acid balance of the blood. Anyone taking this drug is a guinea-pig. Be warned!
Lyrica, Topomax & Lamictal: More excellent consumer marketing. An April article in JAMA found seizure drugs linked to 26 suicides, 801 attempted suicides, and 41 violent deaths in just five years. Last August the FDA issued a warning linking Lamictal to brain inflammation (aseptic meningitis.) $51 million was paid through Medicaid alone for Lamictal last year despite generic brands. Why is this epilepsy drug being taken to lessen pain?? Be warned!
Humira, Prolia & TNF Blockers: These expensive and dangerous injectables are made from genetically engineered hamster cells and suppress the actual immune system. Recently Humira has been actively marketed to college students for Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. The label warns that the use of this drug may invite tuberculosis, serious, possibly lethal infections, melanoma, lymphoma and "unusual cancers in children and teenagers". It also warns of: developing "new or worsening" psoriasis - a condition it is supposed to treat. Know what it is you ingest!
Chantix: Chantix is linked to angioedema, serious skin reactions, visual impairment, accidental injury, dizziness, muscle spasms, seizures and loss of consciousness. After 397 FDA cases of possible psychosis, 227 domestic reports of suicidal acts, thoughts or behaviors and 28 suicides, the government banned pilots and air traffic controllers and interstate truck and bus drivers from taking Chantix in 2008. Four months later, some military pharmacies banned the drug as well. This leaves the general public...be warned!
Ambien: According to the National Health Institute, sleeping pills like Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata and Rozerem only decrease get-to-sleep time by 18 minutes. "We are 1 nation under sedation."
Tamoxifen: Both the original safety studies of Tamoxifen, which causes cancer, birth defects and is a chemical cousin of organochlorine pesticides, and its original marketing were riddled with scientific error. In fact, FDA objected to AstraZeneca's marketing claim of breast cancer prevention and the casting of endometrial cancer as an "uncommon" event 10 years ago. A Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation study shows an example of Tamoxifen's downside: 57.2 percent of women on continuous Tamoxifen developed atrophy of the lining of the uterus, 35.7 coexisting hyperphasia and 8.1 percent uterine polyps.
Tamoxifen cousin, Evista, which big pharma is also pushing, has a "death from stroke" warning on its label.
Boniva: Bone drugs like Boniva, Fosamax and Actonel are good examples of FDA approving once-unapprovable drugs by transferring risk onto the public's shoulders with "we warned you" labels. The warnings are supposed to make people make their own safety decisions. Except that people believe the FDA wouldn't have approved it if it weren't safe!! If you are thinking about taking any of these drugs, read the instructions carefully!
Prempro & Premarin: 26% increase in breast cancer, 41% increase in strokes, 29% increase in heart attacks, 22% increase in cardiovascular disease, double the rates of blood clots and links to: deafness, urinary incontinence, cataracts, gout, joint degeneration, asthma, lupus, sceroderma, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and lung, ovarian, breast, endometrial, gall bladder and melanoma cancers. After all these documented problems, these hormone drugs are still being marketed to women and Pfizer is getting ready to launch their 'light' hormone treatment drug for women who are unfortunate enough to ingest these meds.
BE WARNED! Don't wait for another massive recall. Watch what you eat, move your body, and take care to enjoy life.
