Do you think a Front Yard Vegetable Garden should be a crime?
One week from today, next Tuesday July 26th, an incredibly absurd trial is set to begin. Julie Bass, of Oak Park, Michigan is being charged with planting a vegetable garden in her front yard.
Absurd as it is, she is a mother of 6 kids and if she is found guilty of a misdemeanor crime, she faces a penalty of up to over 3 months in jail!
An article by Colleen Vanderlinden explains: she is being tried because her garden evidently "is in noncompliance with a city ordinance that states that only 'suitable' plant material is allowed on the lawn area of residences. When local media asked city planner Kevin Rulkowski what that meant, he said suitable means 'common': lawn, nice shrubs, and flowers. However, the city ordinance does not specifically state that those are the only allowed plant materials.
A call to action has been made to help. Local and social media are reaching out to gather support for Julie against this ridiculous waste of tax payers' money and the outrageous statement being made by the idiotic city officials.
Please help by writing or calling officials for the city of Oak Park or 'Like' the Oak Park Hates Veggies Facebook page and please spread the word via Facebook, Twitter or word of mouth.
