Heirloom Seed Bank and Exchange
Heritage Farms in Decorah, Iowa is home to the Seed Savers Exchange (SSE), one of the largest nongovernment-owned seed banks in the U.S. whose mission is to protect North America’s diverse but endangered garden heritage by building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants.
Founded in 1975, today SSE has 13,000 members who contribute 1 million seed varieties making it the nation's leading heirloom seed bank and exchange.
In 2006, SSE created Herman's Garden Program in honor of Herman Warsh, one of SSE's earliest and most passionate supporters who passed away in that year. This program donates overstock and returned veggie, herb and flower seed packets to community groups around the U.S. for educational and humanitarian purposes.
In 2010, their seed donation program supplied more than 35,000 seed packets to 462 organizations in 46 states. 25 non-profit and community organizations in Iowa also received the generous donations.
