About Shea Butter
Its oil is edible and may be used in cooking but it is widely known as a superb moisturizer and emollient with exceptional healing properties for the skin. Compared to other natural butters or oils, shea butter contains far more of the vitamins and other valuable phytonutrients essential for healing.
Shea Butter contains antioxidant vitamins A, E and F and beneficial fatty acids that leave skin feeling restored and refreshed. The high amount of vitamin A works to improve a number of skin conditions such as blemishes, wrinkles, eczema and dermititas. It is also used to help heal dry skin, peeling after tanning, itching, skin cracks, frost bite, prevent stretch marks, muscle fatigue, and for poison ivy and poison oak.
The natural moisturizers in shea butter are the same moisturizers produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin.
Quality of products range from excellent (class A) to poor (class F), so be careful as poor quality shea butter is ineffective in healing. It should be a creamy color; shea that is pure white is highly refined and may no longer contain maximum healing properties. Shea butter should never be green, extremely hard or greasy.
One interesting company, Out of Africa, in partnership with a number of women's cooperatives in Benin, West Africa, harvests high quality shea butter each year by hand selecting shea nuts with the lowest acidity levels, which provides the best healing and nourishment for skin.
Out of Africa shea butter is 100% natural, has no parabens or sulfates, and is Vegan and eco-friendly. What we like alot is, they also help school children by providing education through the revenues from shea butter sales. 5 to 30 cents from each product sold is contributed to help provide medical care and education to the children in West Africa. Plus, job opportunities are provided to the local women's cooperatives through Out of Africa’s factory in West Africa, allowing co-ops to provide income, health benefits and education to families in the community.
Hat's off to Out of Africa!
