Grow your own Superfoods
Worshipping the ground that feeds us is coming back into the conscience of America. The terrible economy we have been living with recently has made more and more people turn to growing their own food. If you have a garden, most likely it is already full of superfoods.
Superfoods, as we explained in our post for Angie in November, are nutritionally dense, full of antioxidants and low in calories. They help us prevent and fight sickness and disease, and give us optimal health and well-being.
Here is our list of easy superfoods to grow at home ~
Broccoli: a great source of antioxidants and loaded with vitamins C, A, Beta Carotene and fiber. Broccoli is one of the most nutritionally dense foods known, having more polyphenols than any other food (other than beets and red onions.) Broccoli recipes for you.
Carrots: full of antioxidants, phytonutrients and nearly every vitamin you can name!
Garlic: loaded with nearly every good thing you can imagine. It aids digestion so helps our bodies to get all the nutrients it needs from the foods we eat. In addition to allicin (gives garlic its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties), it is full of vitamin C and B6, aginine, flavonoids and polyphenols, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. Our garlic recipes again for you :)
Green Beans: one of the easiest things to grow, great for kidney stones and arthritis, packed with minerals.
Spinach: packed with some of the highest concentrations of vitamin A and C and folic acid. Eat with tomatoes. Spinach recipes.
Tomatoes: full of antioxidants and vitamin C. Our tomato recipes.
Watch us start our garden at home in bio-degradable pots for keeping in the kitchen until they are ready to be planted outside.
The thing with planting seeds in containers is you need to be extra careful to keep the soil moist to the touch always, like a damp sponge. Follow the directions on the seed package...in about a week seeds will begin sprouting.
