Foods That Heal ~ about arthritis
More than 19 million American adults suffer from arthritis, or inflammation of the joints. Arthritis is crippling, painful and prevents people from enjoying simple daily pleasures once taken for granted.
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, "the term arthritis is used to describe more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect joints, the tissues that surround the joint and other connective tissue. "These diseases include osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, and while each is slightly different they all result in pain and disability.
A huge and growing number of Americans also limit their activities because of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. These and many other diseases are known to be diet related. Meat, dairy products, corn, wheat, oats, rye, citrus fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, soy, nuts and coffee are all major arthritis triggers.
Due to a horrible diet of processed foods, too much meat and dairy and not enough fruits and veggies, arthritis is another adult disease affecting more and more kids in America. While drugs will help to mask the pain, more drugs in addition to a toxic diet is not the answer...obviously!
The most important advice regarding diet and arthrithis (most disease actually) is ~ if you are overweight, lose weight. Extra weight puts extra stress on joints. Every pound of weight you lose equates to 4 pounds less stress pressure on your knees. Body fat increases levels of inflammation, so by losing weight and avoiding excess calories that cause weight gain, you will automatically reduce the level of inflammation in your body.
Certain vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans (legumes) and good fats actually have the opposite effect on our bodies. It has been scientifically proven that a healthy diet of mainly fruits and vegetables can actually help to reverse disease. Any food that fights inflammation should be on your plate every meal, every day, if you have arthritis or want to avoid living with this debilitating disease.
Eat the following foods to beat arthritis:
Any foods high in Omega 3 fatty acids (O3FAs) such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna (wild fish have more O3FAs than farm-raised fish.) Flaxseed, leafy greens and algae are good non-fish sources of O3FAs.
X-tra virgin olive oil,
Whole grains and beans have known anti-inflammatory properties and contain a myriad of minerals and vitamins including vitamin E and selenium (fiber-rich grains and beans also help against high cholesterol problems and heart disease, and against breast, colon and other cancers.)
Certain antioxidants help prevent arthritis, slow its progress and relieve pain such as foods high in vitamin C, selenium, carotenes (sweet potatoes, kale, pumpkins, cantaloupe, sweet red peppers, spinach),
Foods with bioflavonoids (leeks, onions, kale, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, blueberries and apples)
Apples cushion our joints,
The protective effect of of grains, beans, veggies and fish can be multiplied by cooking with certain spices ~ rosemary, ginger and turmeric.
