Nobody really understands migraine headaches but research is revealing that migraine is a neurological disease based on an inherited genetic abnormality. If one of your parents suffers from migraine, there is a 50% chance you will.
Migraine triggers are broken down into two categories: internal & external. Within these two categories is every possibility under the sun...environmental factors, lifestyle choices, stress...and what we are here for ~ food.
There are pages and pages of advice regarding migraine triggers. Both tyramine (a compound found in many foods produced from the natural breakdown of amino acid) and tannins (a plant compound that is found in teas and wine) are suspected to be major culprits and therefore people are advised to stay away from these two triggers in particular.
Essentially ~ eat a diet of fresh veggies and fruit. Stay away from anything aged, dried (all nuts), fermented (teriyaki & soy sauces), salted, smoked or pickled (sauerkraut, watch out especially for pepperoni, salami and liverwurst), all alcohol & fermented beverages, and of course all chemicals (msg, dyes, anything difficult to pronounce.)
