Support farming. Please watch this informative & important video.
Since the mid 1990's American farmers markets have increased by 300% ~ supporting an increased demand from consumers. Holistic and organic farming is valued more and more however, these farmers are not able to sustain their farms due to the unfair government agenda, favoring more lucrative and toxic big business.
Each year the USDA gives billions of dollars to a few large agro farming enterprises, making it extremely hard for smaller, organic and local farmers to exist. Small farmers not only shoulder more production costs (everything from labor to land...and maybe legal fees with Monsanto breathing down the back of their necks) than big industrial operations, but they also have to deal with weather, pests and disease.
The organic sector has seen annual double-digit expansion for at least two decades now. Let's keep purchasing directly from (supporting) this sector and our small farmers. 'Double digit growth' ~ maybe our government will finally realize the profit potential in healthier agro and throw some money this way ~ helping the farmers and making it cheaper for all of us to buy.
Heather Rogers wrote an article titled Slowed Food Revolution where she explains: Obama seeks to boost demand for organic food but doesn't offer meaningful support for the people who grow it. I think he should take some of those billions making big agro fat, and subsidize the cost of running and maintaining a system that supports organic farming. Right out the gate, the first cost to be certified organic is too expensive, it is prohibitive to many farmers.
Do whatever you can to support this very important American livelihood. Watch this excellent explanation of the $90 million U.S. Farm Bill and why so little of it goes directly into our diet.
Help make a change. Support our organic, local and small farmers.
