GMO's ~ do you know? If you did, you'd care!
The biggest problem with Genetically Modified Organisms isn't that they are found in nearly everything we consume in America, it is that people have no clue as to what, where, why and how come they are everywhere.
April Davila, a freelance writer in L.A., came across this worrying concern and found out how seriously difficult it would be to try to go A Month Without Monsanto: What Does It Take To Cut Out the GMO Giant?
I applaud her curiosity and, in answer to her question, say that the only way to cut them out is by doing exactly what she has done ~ get educated and help spread the word. So here is some more info to learn:
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism that has had its natural DNA changed. U.S. based Monsanto owns the largest share of genetically modified crops, globally. Their strong-arm threats and tactics are well known throughout the industry and have destroyed and continue to devastate many smaller players (mainly farmers.) The global value of such crops was about $130 billion in 2008 (most current value available.)
GMOs are completely banned in Japan, New Zealand, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Luxemburg, Ireland, Poland, Bulgaria, parts of Australia, Africa and South America.
In 2004, Mendocino County in CA became the first county in America to ban the production of GMOs.
Vanity Fair Magazine published a 6-page investigative article titled: Monsanto's Harvest of Fear. Please take time to check it out (just click on the title.)
This video does a good job of explaining the background and history of Monsanto. It is part 1 of a 10 part series. Have a look, it will hopefully make you want to learn even more.
