Halloween ~ the best treats to offer...
Halloween is quickly approaching! Where did the month of October go?!! Many people have given this highly anticipated and enjoyed American holiday lots of thought already ~ costumes, parties, what to offer trick-or-treaters at the door...
It is advised that we stay away from hard candy and offer choclates instead because chocolate melts in our mouths while hard candy gets stuck in our teeth, which inevitably leads to problems.
The best treats to offer are apples. Apples are often called 'Nature's Toothbrush' because they stimulate the gums, increase saliva flow and reduce build-up of cavity-causing bacteria.
Unfortunately we can not allow our kids to accept apples from strangers because there are so many demented strangers out there! SO, give your kids an apple at home and explain to them that in addition to brushing and flossing ~ a diet of mainly fruits and veggies provides all the minerals, vitamins and other nutrients essential for healthy teeth and gums.
Red Apples ~ Research in 2005/2006 at Cornell University & Agri-Food Canada showed that a group of chemicals called phenolics (high in Red Delicious & Northern Spy Apples as well as their juices) helps protect our brains from degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's...as well as reducing the risk of prostate, colon and lung cancers.
There is a lot of truth in the old adage: An Apple A Day!
