Drastically reduce your salt today ~ The DASH Diet!
A maximum of 1500 mgs of salt per day is the new recommended Individual American Daily Salt Consumption guideline. The average American eats 3500 mgs per day!
Did you know one order of Buffalo Wings at Chili's has 5350 mgs. of salt in it...the Chicken Club Taco has 4770 mgs...and Texas Chili Fries w/chili & jalapena ranch has a whopping 5950 mgs??? Remember, these are considered one meal...some people eat this way several meals a day!
Too much or too little salt in our bodies can lead to muscle cramps, dizziness, or electrolyte disturbance which can cause neurological problems or death. Excessive salt consumption is linked to many health problems such as: stroke, cardiovascular disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), cardiac enlargement, heart attack, heart failure, hypernatremia, renal disease, edema, ulcers, heartburn, osteoporosis, stomach cancer and death (ingesting a large amount in a short time: 1g per kg of body weight; mistaking salt for sugar for a baby; enemas.)
A Center for Disease Control (CDC) recent survey estimated that over 75% of the sodium in our diets comes from processed and restaurant foods, including frozen dinners, lunch meats, salad dressings and granola bars.
Hats off to all the people who are already 'at-risk' hypertension patients and MUST change their diet ~ they have been hitting the daily 1500 mark ~ with the help in part of the DASH Diet which is comprised simply of whole foods ~ fruits, veggies, whole grains and low-fat dairy products as well as a small amount of animal protein. That's what we call healthy fast food!
