About Pears...another power food
Pears are considered 'Power Foods' They have a high fiber content (6g - almost a quarter of what you need a day!), Potassium (212mg) and Vitamin C (7.5mg). The skin contains mostly insoluble fiber, which promotes healthy digestion. The flesh's soluble fiber, including Pectin, helps you feel fuller longer and keeps blood sugar even. The Pectin lowers LDL ('bad') cholesterol...so snacking on pears regularly can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and may guard against diabetes. Unlike many fruits - pears ripen best off the tree. Pears ripen from the inside out, so a soft pear means it is past its prime. To determine if a pear is ready to eat, press gently near the stem, if it yields slightly it is good to go!
Pears are less allergenic than other fruits, so are often one of the first foods for babies. Pears can be useful in treating inflammation of mucus membranes, colitis, chronic gallbladder disorders, arthritis and gout. These fruits can also be beneficial in lowering high blood pressure, controlling cholesterol levels and increasing urine acidity. In ancient Greece, pears were used to treat nausea.
Pears are one of the most contaminated conventionally farmed fruits on the market, so you really need to be buying organic pears. Why? 1 billion pounds of pesticides are sprayed over our food supply each year. At least 50 of these chemicals are classified as carcinogenic by our government. Buying organic is about more than keeping toxic food out of our bodies. It is about supporting a system of sustainable agricultural that promotes soil health and fertility through the use of such methods as crop rotation and cover cropping, which nourish plants, foster species diversity, help combat climate change, prevent damage to valuable water resources, and protect farmers and farmers’ families from exposure to harmful chemicals. Buying organic is a commitment to the bigger, more complex picture of which our personal health and a healthy future is a result.
Very importantly, everytime we buy anything organic, we are making a statement. Our government spends over $20 billion on price supports that benefit the beef, dairy and veal industries. Guess how much is spent supporting our farmers who are barely able to continue producing fruits and veggies for us...NOTHING, not a penny! So by buying organic, we support small farmers and a healthy food supply...
See our Salad with Shredded Pear recipe and remember that the most contaminated fruits are: Apples & Pears, imported Grapes, Strawberries, the stone fruits~Peaches, Nectarines & Apricots, Cherries and Red Raspberries ~ so buy organic when eating these fruits.
