What vegetables do we really need to buy organic?

Day 6.

In general be aware that, thin skinned vegetables that grow underground or leafy greens that grow close to the ground (salad greens, Swiss chard, collard greens) absorb pesticides and heavy metals, or have high pesticide residue levels.

These are the veggies I always look for to buy organic:

Bell Peppers (all colors) are highly likely to contain multiple pesticide residues.

Carrots absorb so much heavy metal from soil, they are sometimes grown as a 'throwaway' crop to rid a field of lead or arsenic contamination. On top of this, conventially packaged baby carrots are rinsed with bleach, which is why they produce a thin white film if left in the plastic bags too long!

Celery is the veggie most likely to contain pesticide residues.

Conventional Cucumbers are grown with highly toxic organophosphate pesticides.

Green Beans are sprayed multiple times with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides while growing.

Potatoes, especially russets, are highly likely to contain multiple pesticide residues.

Spinach is often grown in less-than-ideal conditions, so conventional farmers use significant amounts of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Spinach often contains residues of DDT & permethrin.

If you or your family eat any of these veggies often, find out where organically grown produce is sold ~ it is well worth the time and money.  Think of it as insurance against unwanted doctor & hospital bills down the road...
